2015 Angus Armanasco Stakes to Figure for Fontein Ruby

February 5th, 2015

Fontein Ruby posted several impressive results over the 2014 Australian racing calendar and will reportedly contest the 2015 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 28th second-up.

Finishing outside the places only a handful of times through her 12 start career so far, Fontein Ruby has not been seen at the races since failing to get the distance and finishing a disappointing last in the featured Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) on November 6th; a race for which she was once rated a clear favourite for success.

Having reportedly taken well to her time in the paddock and subsequent return to work, trainer Robert Smerdon told Racing Ahead he cannot fault the daughter of Turffontein, revealing he is yet to settle on an Autumn Carnival plan for the three-year-old beyond the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) and 2015 Angus Armanasco Stakes.

“She’s always been a really tough filly but she seems to be going as good or better than she’s ever gone,” Smerdon said.

“She’ll run Saturday week and then she’ll run again a fortnight later at Caulfield and we’ll have a clearer picture then of where we’ll be going.

“Prefer to keep them to their own age but it’s not impossible to think we’ll take on the older mares, but I do like to keep three-year-olds against three-year-olds.”

Failing to make much of an impact over four starts through the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Fontein Ruby returned to racing in spring a far-more matured horse; running third in the Equiano King Of Speed Open (900m) first-up before securing back-to-back victories in Sandown and Flemington minor events over 1200m and 1410m respectively.

Unlucky to be blocked for a run and fifth in the TMB Printing Handicap (1400m) on September 20th, the filly out of Charming Ruby made a successful transition to black type racing in taking out each of the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) and Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m); placing sixth in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) in what was her only other start prior to the Crown Oaks.
